Jenks Holds On in GTR CUP Consolation Match

Assistant captain Cody Sharrock and captain Kirby Wilson each scored two goals, fueling Jenks to a 6-4 victory over the Comets in the consolation game of the first Cup Tuesday at the Center.
The Comets started and finished by buzzing around the Trojans’ goal, but Sharrock scored twice in the first period and Wilson once as Jenks built a 4-1 lead.
Outshot 35-8 in a 7-0 first-round loss to Broken Arrow, the Comets outshot the Trojans 5-1 in the first three minutes. Jenks goalie Mason O’Brien denied Landon Womble’s breakaway with a pad save 2:34 into the game and Justin McGregor put Jenks on top two minutes later with wrist shot from just right of the crease.
Jeremy Reese produced a 1-1 tie for the Comets when he twirled from 10 feet out and fired top shelf over O’Brien at 6:59. Sharrock then scored to make it 2-1 and added a power play goal at 3:25, giving Jenks a 3-1 lead. Following the Comets early shot advantage, the Trojans took 12 of the next 13 shots to break away.
Wilson, assisted by Jeff Wilson, scored with 44 seconds remaining in the opening 13-minute period.
Matthew Strnad cut Jenks’ lead to 4-2 just 55 seconds into the second period and Jacob Schmidt tallied late in the period to keep the Comets within 5-3.
Paul Wilson sent a shorthanded shot trickling past O’Brien and slowly across the line with 5:05 left, pulling the Comets within 6-4. The Comets pulled goalie Devyn Stowers and the Trojans’ Connor Steyer was penalized for cross checking with 33 seconds to go.
Despite a couple of close chances, the Comets could not convert on their 6-on-4 man advantage and Jenks held on.
