KUDOS OF THE MONTH: American Airlines

American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center is one of the largest private employers in Oklahoma and is the largest in the Tulsa area. More than 6,800 individuals are beginning or expanding their career at the base. Of those, 5,800 are licensed aircraft and jet engine mechanics. American Airlines also serves Tulsa-area travelers efficiently. An example is the recently announced direct flight to Miami, Fla.
In June 1946, American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center was established at Tulsa International Airport. The aviation facility is currently one of the largest and most innovative in the world.
The center is situated on a total of 260 acres and features 3.3 million square feet of operations area.
It serves as the maintenance base for the American Airlines fleet of MD-80, A300 and B737 aircraft. This is a combined total of nearly 580 airplanes. In addition, overhaul work is performed on American Airlines Pratt and Whitney JT-8, General Electric CF6-80 and CFM56 jet engines.
Each year, 80 percent of the airline’s fleet receives major overhaul work on the base. A variety of other carriers also turn to the American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center for maintenance assistance on a contractual basis.
The center offers a number of services that incorporate the newest techniques in the field today. Some of the featured services of the facility include jet aircraft wheel and brake overhaul capabilities and a composite repair center.
