KUDOS OF THE MONTH: Citizen Foresters

GREEN VOLUNTEERING: Citizen Foresters have been making Tulsa an even more beautiful community by planting and caring for trees.
The Citizen Foresters have been making a difference in the Tulsa area landscape for the last two years and continue to do so today.
Citizen Foresters are an important component of the non-profit organization Up With Trees.
This group of volunteers gets together on a weekly basis to prune trees in order to make Tulsa an even more beautiful place to live. Not only are these pruners providing aesthetic benefits for all, but the actual cuts that they make ensure the health and longevity of the urban trees.
Once the volunteers tend to one area of trees, they move on to another. The Operations Team of Up With Trees then follows behind, picking up the branches and carrying them to a green waste site.
In addition, Citizen Foresters help to plant trees in urban locations, inventory trees in parks and other locations as well as reach out to the community through education at events.
The volunteer’s time and talent have been greatly appreciated by everyone involved in Up With Trees and those who live in the community.
For those interested in becoming involved, the next training session will be held for four consecutive Saturday mornings beginning Feb. 4, 2012 at the Up With Trees Facility near 11th and Boston Streets.
Citizen Foresters receive 16 hours of training with Tulsa’s top arborists, learning how to identify tree species, plant and maintain trees as well as promote urban forestry awareness and education.
