The Folds of Honor Foundation was established in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney. Having become a decorated F-16 pilot and Professional Golf Association member, the idea of bringing together the two things that he was passionate about was founded on a recent experience.
Following the landing of a commercial flight, an announcement was made to remain seated in respect to a family meeting their fallen soldier beside the plane. Major Rooney was touched by the scene of a young mother and child waiting for their loved one to be brought to them. He wondered what would happen to the child and decided that he was going to do something to help support families in similar situations.
From an idea to what has become an important organization in the military community, Major Rooney formed the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The foundation brings the gift of hope to families who have been faced with the heartbreaking situation of losing a loved one in combat. Its mission is to empower deserving military families with educational support and opportunities. The main way that the Folds of Honor Foundation reaches this goal is by providing scholarships to spouses and children of fallen soldiers.
Funds for the scholarships are often raised through benefit golf tournaments that are held around the nation.
Just this month, the Folds of Honor Foundation welcomed the entire community to the opening of its national headquarters. Appropriately surrounded by The Patriot Golf Course in the new Stone Canyon development, the office will bring the organization one step closer to reaching out to even more military families.
