KUDOS OF THE MONTH: Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League


The Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League () celebrates its 60th year in 2014. It is an affiliate of the National Urban League, providing direct services to people in the Tulsa community through programs, advocacy and research. The organization focuses on four core areas: education and youth, economic development, health and quality of life, and civic engagement.

The Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League was founded in 1954 by a group of concerned citizens from a broad section of Tulsa with the goal of ensuring that African-Americans have equal access to housing, education, and health care. Today, Urban League affiliates nationwide are focused on empowering communities and changing lives. Locally, remains focused on its four core areas through a variety of social service and educational programs. Services include housing counseling (homebuyers, homeowners, financial literacy, foreclosure prevention), employment services (case management to assist job seekers in identifying job opportunities as well as providing soft skills training), infant mortality prevention (case management and emergency assistance with baby items), after-school tutoring for students in all grade levels through 12th grade, its six-week freedom school program, held every summer, voter registration, community issues forums, and candidate forums.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League is to enable African Americans and others in need to secure self-sufficiency through education and life skills development programs. founders and members believe they have the responsibility of helping everyone maximize the potential of self, family and community. The organization also stands for absolute equal opportunity to succeed. It endeavors to prepare youth for future leadership and to empower adults to lead now. Of course, all of these accomplishments come about through education, which is fundamental for any future success.
