KUDOS OF THE MONTH: Steadman Upham

STEADMAN UPHAM

After a successful chapter as the 17th president of The University of Tulsa, Steadman Upham will step down from his position effective June 30, 2012. He plans to continue to be involved in education through teaching and research.

With a passion for reaching out to others, Upham accepted his current position in 2004. Since then he has made a lasting impression on the University of Tulsa that will never fade. Under his guidance, the administration has improved academic quality, increased enrollment and added more than a million square feet of innovative facilities to the campus. In addition, Upham has worked to create financial stability during the unpredictable economy. With the Board of Trustees, he helped to raise more than $500 million through the university’s largest comprehensive campaign.

Reaching far beyond paper, he has also created more than 300 scholarships, managed the Thomas Gilcrease Museum, pioneered new fields of study, and enhanced global outreach.

With inspiration from his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Arizona State University, Upham has written more than ten books about archeology and has enjoyed working with this department of the University of Tulsa.

He has and will continue to support the community and to help students reach their goals in any way that he can in his new role at the University of Tulsa. By closing one chapter of his career, Upham is looking forward to opening another one in the coming year.
