KVOO, GTR Win Zebco Media Fishing Challenge

GTR TEAM: The Greater Tulsa Reporter Newspapers team at the Zebco Fishing Challenge consisted of, from left, Steve Cameron, Matt Gross, D. J. Morrow Ingram, and in front, Riley Ingram. Not pictured is Sharon Cameron, who had to leave early. Speculation has it that if she had stayed, GTR would have easily won the event.

The seventh annual Zebco Media Fishing Challenge was held recently at LaFortune Park. The KVOO radio team, with 28 points, was this year’s top team. It was their first Media Challenge win. They took the traveling trophy away from last year’s winners, KJRH Channel 2.

Steve Cameron of GTR Newspapers took top individual scoring honors, winning a Zebco travel rod and reel. Smallest fish was caught by Tulsa World’s Lisa Smith, and she received a Quantum ultralight rod and reel for the catch.

Bud Lewis was high-point man on the KVOO team, with 16 points, earning him MVP honors and a Quantum PT baitcast reel.

Second place went to the Tulsa World team, a three-time winner of the event, with 25 points. Third place was GTR Newspapers with 24 points. Also participating in the event were KJRH Channel 2, KOTV Channel 6 and KTUL Channel 8.

The Zebco Media Fishing Challenge is held each year as the official kickoff to National Fishing and Boating Week and Zebco’s Take Me Fishing Day.

The Media Challenge Rules are simple. Each team is allowed up to six anglers, but only the top three scores count. Points are accumulated according to species caught: one point for sunfish, two points for catfish and three points for bass. There is a maximum point limit per team for sunfish, 25 points. The point system makes for some interesting strategies among the teams.

For its win, KVOO took home the beautiful traveling trophy of a leaping bass mounted on diamond wood with a green marble base. Each member of the winning team also received a Quantum spinning reel.

The Most Unusual Catch category was a tie: Craig Day, KOTV Channel 6, for reeling in a big snapping turtle, and Jess Hull, KTUL Channel 8, for a long battle with the pond’s aerator. They won Rhino tackle bags.

Channel 6 also won “Best Fish Story” and each team member was awarded a Zebco DeLiar for the honor. KJRH Channel 2 won the Early Entry Award.
