League of Women Voters Turns 92

The League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa () celebrated its 92nd birthday Feb. 16 by holding an informative and enjoyable event at the Sophian Plaza in Tulsa. President Heather Hope-Hernandez, left in the photo, introduced honored guest Sheryl Lovelady, right. Lovelady is the director of the Women’s Leadership Initiative, located in the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center at the University of Oklahoma. She gave an excellent talk about Oklahoma women in politics, the need for women to get involved, as well as the myriad of opportunities that exist for women in public office.
“Oklahoma’s women have so much to offer. It’s important that they become more aware of the opportunities available to them to get involved in public service and participate in the legislative process,” says Lovelady. One example of these opportunities is The Appointment Project (), one of the programs at the Women’s Leadership Initiative. The program identifies and encourages women to get involved in public service through applying for governor appointments to statewide boards and commissions for the state of Oklahoma. The application process is open to all womenº, and can be completed at the Women’s leadership Initiative website by filling out a simple form. Lovelady encourages all Oklahoma women to apply.
Following Lovelady’s presentation, members presented a “Dress for Electoral Success” fashion show while guests enjoyed a wide array of refreshments.
