Local Middle School Students Recognized

Middle school students from 27 counties throughout Oklahoma were recognized for their math skills and achievements during the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics’ 10th Annual Middle School Math: an Awesome Contest held on the school’s Oklahoma City campus in March.
More than 180 students from 59 schools, grades 6th – 8th, participated in the final round of the competition. Several students received individual trophies and medals awarded in four divisions. All students received certificates of achievement. Ten years worth of tests are available on the school’s website www.ossm.edu.
After the middle school math test, more than 550 students, family members and teachers toured two academic buildings on the 32-acre campus.
is Oklahoma’s public, residential school for junior and senior high school students with exceptional abilities in science and math. While at , students participate in a rigorous academic program. In addition to advanced level courses in the sciences and mathematics, curriculum includes exemplary programs in computer science, humanities, the arts and physical education.

The Tulsa area students recognized are Sae Yeun Chang, an eighth-grader at Union 8th Grade Center, who earned Division IV 8th Grade Female Third Place.
Halle Poleman, a sixth-grader at University School, earned Division IV 6th Grade Female Second Place.
Saagar Basavaraju, a sixth-grader at University School, earned Division IV 6th Grade Male Third Place.
Yash Kumar, a seventh-grader at University School, earned Division IV 7th Grade Male First Place. He also was recognized for Division IV Fifth Place Overall Top Score.
