LocumTenens.com Sponsors Medical Brigades to Honduras
Alpharetta, GA (Vocus/PRWEB ) February 4, 2010 — LocumTenens.com, a full-service physician recruiting firm and online job board, is proud to support important work providing medical care to the underserved in Honduras. Through a partnership between Jackson Healthcare, LocumTenens.com’s parent company, and Mission Predisan, a Christian not-for-profit organization, LocumTenens.com has sponsored two one-week medical brigades to Honduras. In January, two LocumTenens.com employees had the opportunity to join the second brigade, traveling with the team to Catacamas, Honduras.
The medical brigades consist of volunteer physicians, nurses and allied health professionals who volunteer to provide diagnostic and treatment services to the people of Catacamas, Honduras and 49 nearby rural areas. The teams provide much needed medical care to people who otherwise would go without care. On average Predisan sends 18-20 brigades each year to provide surgeries for people who are often forced to wait 6-8 months for necessary surgeries.

Chris Franklin, vice president of the surgery division, and Mark Holmes, director of recruiting – psychiatry, represented LocumTenens.com on the recent trip to Honduras which took place January 16-21.
“When the possibility arose for me to go, I knew instantly that I wanted to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to help impact a community that doesn’t have access to the kind of healthcare we have here in the United States,” said Franklin. “This opportunity really reflects the true spirit of service I’ve seen here at LocumTenens.com.”
“Although I’ve wanted to, I’d never been able to go on a trip like this previously,” said Holmes. “So when the opportunity to go to Honduras worked out, I was very excited.”
Franklin and Holmes joined a team of other volunteers, including surgeons and nurses, who ran two fully-functioning operating rooms for three and a half days, 7-8 hours each day. One operating room conducted ongoing general surgeries while the other performed steady days of obstetric and gynecological surgeries. While in Honduras the team completed a total of 44 surgeries.
“We assisted the doctors, nurses, and Predisan staff any way we could,” said Franklin. “We went back and forth disposing of waste, held flashlights – whatever was needed.”
“What struck me most about my experience in Honduras was the dedication of the Predisan staff who have devoted their lives to helping their neighbors, and the compassion evident in these volunteer doctors and nurses who give of their time, resources and skills to practice medicine where it is needed most,” said Holmes.
“Our work at LocumTenens.com exists to help make quality patient care possible every day – this journey to Honduras allowed me to experience patient care from an entirely different angle. I was able to get out from behind a desk and see people caring for patients on the front lines,” said Franklin. “I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to go.”
