Martinez Selected for Junior National Team
NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma incoming softball freshman Destinee Martinez (Corona, Calif.) is one of 17 athletes selected to represent the United States on the 2010 Women’s Junior National Team, the Amateur Softball Association announced today.
The team will compete later this year at the III Pan American Softball Championship (18-and-under), August 6-15, in Bogota, Colombia, which serves as a qualifier for the International Softball Federation (ISF) IX Jr. Women’s World Championship (19-and-under), December 6-17, 2011, in Cape Town, South Africa. Karen Johns is the team’s head coach.
The athletes were selected for the team by the five-member USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Committee based on performances at the 2010-11 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team Selection Camp, June 10-12, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Martinez, a 5-4 outfielder, prepped at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona, Calif. She earned second team all-state honors from Cal Hi Sports in 2009 and was a first team all-area selection by The (Riverside, Calif.) Press Enterprise. Martinez also earned first team all-league honors and was named to the all-tournament team at the Corona Tournament. She hit .516 overall as a junior with 48 hits and a .622 on-base percentage. Martinez also stole 12 bases. Outside of softball, Martinez has served as her class’ vice-president since 2008.
Martinez has spent the past five summers with the Corona Angels. The team finished in the top 25 at the 2009 Amateur Softball Association GOLD Nationals in Oklahoma City, a season where she hit .480 for the team. The squad finished second at that same event in 2008.
