Metro Christian Raises over $11,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation
TULSA, . – On Thursday, May 13th at 2: 00 p.m. in the Metro Christian Academy Auditorium, the 2009/10 Leadership Class will present a check for $11,418.22 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The gift will grant the wish of 11-year old Riley who would like to be in the military and participate in the Marine Corp’s basic training for a day at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA.
Riley was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was 3-years old. His younger brother Weston has also been diagnosed with the disease and is a Make-A-Wish child. A portion of the funds raised by Metro Christian Academy will be used to grant Weston’s wish as well.
The Leadership Class, made up of Student Council officers, high school class officers, and leaders from various school organizations, hosted a “Wish Week” consisting of a week of fundraising activities that included a dodge ball tournament, a talent show for Middle School and High School age students, a coin drive “Penny War”, and wristband sales for special dress days.
Granting Riley’s wish will allow him to meet the high ranking officers at Camp Pendleton, take a helicopter ride, be a marine for a day, participate in training, and go to LegoLand and the San Diego Zoo. The total cost of Riley’s wish is $7,000. The remaining $4,418 will be put towards granting his brother’s wish.
“Granting Riley’s wish was a fantastic experience for our students. It fits perfectly with the purpose of our Leadership Class. The class emphasizes that leadership is through actions as well as words; it is about making a difference in others’ lives,” stated Kristi Neerman, Director of Activities.
