Military Scholarship Benefits Student

As a direct descendent of a U.S wartime veteran, Bishop Kelley senior Matthew Hanisch has been selected to receive a $20,000 college scholarship through the Samsung-American Legion program.

Hanisch was also chosen based on his class standing, academic and civic achievements, and financial need. Nine students earned the scholarship from a finalist group of nearly 100.

The Samsung Group, an international electronics company, endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion, to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War. The size and number of scholarships are dependent upon the amount of income derived from the fund. Since 1996, $5,216,000 has been awarded. This year, $277,900 was awarded including a $1,100 scholarship to the 89 “national finalists” for their undergraduate studies.

The American Legion recognized Samsung’s generosity by presenting the company with its 2013 Patriot Award. Yang Kyu Kim, president and of Samsung Electronics North America, accepted the award on Aug. 27, 2013 during the Legion’s 95th national convention in Houston.
