OHO Teams with Aquarium For ‘Shape Up with Shipley’

The Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma (OHO) and Oklahoma Aquarium team up to provide “Shape Up with Shipley,” a free exercise program designed especially for children. The program is scheduled for Saturday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. at the RiverWalk Crossing in Jenks from April 1 to May 6. “Shape Up with Shipley” was developed to address the growing concern regarding childhood obesity and is a fun approach to help children and families develop a healthy lifestyle.

This program is currently being promoted in many Tulsa area schools. Children are receiving a visit from Captain Bones, from the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma, and the Aquarium Mascot, Shipley the Luvabull Shark, who bring the message of the importance of physical activity to their school. Children are encouraged to sign up for the “Shape Up with Shipley” program along with their family and receive a rubber wristband promoting the 2nd Annual Aquarium Run. This run is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 and is part of the Tulsa Public School Triple Crown program.

Children who join the program will have the opportunity to exercise with the Aquarium mascot, “Shipley the Luvabull Shark.” Parents and children who sign up for the program will receive a free pedometer and training information to help them include fitness in their daily routine. Those who complete the entire six-week program will also receive a family pass to the Oklahoma Aquarium.

“The Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma is pleased to be involved in this worthwhile program,” says Rick Ferguson, CEO of the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma. “With the growing concern regarding childhood obesity, our hospital felt the need to develop a program for children in the Tulsa area. Recent research indicates that most children do not meet the minimal requirements for physical activity of 30-60 min of moderate exercise per day 5-6 days per week. This program will give the children and parents the tools to incorporate fitness into their everyday life,” adds Ferguson.

The Shape Up with Shipley Program will start April 1st at 9 a.m. at the RiverWalk Crossing Amphitheatre located on the west bank of the Arkansas River just off the Jenks Bridge. The FREE one-hour program includes a family walk/jog plus fun filled fitness activities. Registration on line is available at www.orthooklahoma.com or call Mary Ann Kingdom at (918) 477-5098 for more information.
