Oklahoma State’s David Named To Bench Award Watch List
WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma State junior catcher Kevin David has been named to the watch list for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza, it was announced today by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
The Bench Award is given annually to the top catcher in Division I baseball, and 53 catchers are on the 2010 watch list. Ten catchers have won the award since its inception in 2000, and 11 former finalists are currently playing in Major League Baseball.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., David is coming off a sophomore season in 2009 in which he hit .311 with six home runs and 47 s in 53 games and was named an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference performer.
David was a 35th-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs last June after a season in which he ranked second in the Big 12 with 23 doubles. He had 16 multi-hit games in ’09 and finished third on the Cowboys in s.
Later this season, the Bench Award Watch List will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists, who will be announced in May. The three finalists for the award will be announced prior to Regionals and the Major League Baseball Draft, and the winner will be announced on July 1.
