Oklahoma State Softball Beats Texas State


MARCOS, Texas ( Athletics ) —The Oklahoma State softball team starts the season 5-0 as they defeated Texas State 6-2 in the final game of the CenturyLink Classic on Sunday. Freshman pitcher Kat Espinosa earned her second win of the season and sophomores Julie Ward and Chelsea Garcia combined for five runs batted in.

The Cowgirls scored first in the third inning when Ward hit a double to right field with the bases loaded to score three. Texas State got on the board in the fifth inning when Kristina Tello got a hit to center field to score Brooke Baker from third. They added one more run when Anna Hernandez hit a solo home run to left field.

built on to their lead when Garcia got a hit up the middle in the top of the sixth and was advanced to second. She scored as junior Mariah Gearhart also hit the ball up the middle. They added two more runs in the seventh as Garcia got a hit to left field to bring home Sammy Jo Diffendaffer and Megan Castle.

Espinosa started and threw five innings, gave up five hits for one run, struck out four and walked two. She improves to 2-0 on the season. Senior Anna Whiddon entered the game in the sixth inning and threw the final two innings, giving up one hit for one run to earn her first save of the season.

Oklahoma State will play again next weekend as they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face Michigan, and Virginia in the Tiger Classic. First game is slated for 2:00 on Friday against Michigan.
