Oklahoma State Wrestling Competes at Reno Tournament
Reno, Nev. – A posse of Cowboys competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday in Reno, Nev., with sophomore Tyson Yoder finishing highest for the Cowboys that competed in the tournament.
After winning his first bout, Yoder lost to the No. 1 seed Dave Morgan of Bakersfield 5-3. After fighting his way through the wrestleback, Yoder found himself in the fifth place bout against Andy Hartshorn of Ohio. Yoder lost the bout 5-1.
Redshirt Freshmen Tyler Dorrell and Stephen Swan were both knocked out of the fourth round in the 125-pound and 157-pound weight divisions, respectively. Dorrell won his first three bouts, but then lost to the No. 2 seed Aaron Kalil of Navy 3-2 in the 125-pound division. After having a in the first round, Swan went on to win his next two bouts, but lost to the No. 1 seed Adam Hall of Boise State 7-1 in the 157-pound division. Swan won his first bout in the wrestleback 9-5 against Josh Condon of Chattanooga, but then lost in his second to R.J. Pena of Oregon State by fall.
Sophomore Joe Ali won his first bout of the tournament with a major decision win in the 165-pound weight division beating Justin Narduzzo of Hastings 11-2. Ali was then beaten by No. 2 seeded Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly by fall. Redshirt Freshman Zach White had a tough draw after winning his first bout in the 174-pound weight division 5-3. After beating Joey Granata of Bakersfield, White faced the No. 1 seeded Nich Amuchastegui of Stanford and lost 5-0. Sophomore Elliott Hellwege lost his first bout of the tournament to Nick Tenpenny of North Carolina 3-2 in the 184-pound weight division.
The Cowboys return to action when they face Arizona State in Gallagher Iba Arena on Jan. 2.
