Oktoberfest Poster Unveiled

The new poster promoting this year’s Oktoberfest was unveiled recently at the German American Society Center, 1429 S. Terrace Drive.

The 2011 poster artist, Steven Grounds, was selected in February of 2011, from among five individuals who submitted conceptual drawings. Grounds created the original work using Gouache and micron brush-tip with Prisma color pencil on heat-pressed watercolor paper.

Grounds, of Navajo and Euchee heritage, was born in Pawnee, Okla. in 1977. He began studying and creating art independently from early childhood. After graduating from Haskell Indian Nations University with a bachelor’s degree in American Indian Studies, Grounds began to focus his artistic vision on his Native American roots.

Drawing inspiration from native iconography and urban artists, he has created a study in new approaches to native art.

The 32nd annual Oktoberfest celebration kicks off Oct. 20 and will run through Oct. 23. Typically, the event attracts 50,000 to 60,000 visitors during its 3 1/2 day run.
