OSU-Tulsa Brightens Skyline

Tulsa’s skyline became a little brighter Nov. 4 as Oklahoma State University-Tulsa hosted a dedication and lights-on ceremony for the new Signature Gateway, located on Standpipe Hill between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Detroit Avenue.
“The Signature Gateway highlights OSU’s presence as part of the downtown Tulsa skyline and lets campus visitors know they are entering Cowboy country,” says -Tulsa President Howard Barnett. “The gateway will increase our connectivity with downtown businesses and entertainment districts.”
The dedication included the official lighting of the logos on the 70-foot-tall brick structure atop Standpipe Hill. Each evening at dusk, the lights will come on, further promoting OSU’s presence.
Oklahoma State Regent for Higher Education Jay Helm, a former /A&M Board of Regents member and -Tulsa Trustee, and University Center at Tulsa Authority Chairman Bill McKamey assisted Barnett with flipping the switch to light the gateway.
Flintco served as construction manager on the Signature Gateway project. Construction on the project began last fall and major work was completed this spring, with Alaback Design Associates serving as designer and Kinslow, Keith and Todd as architect.
“Flintco, and Alaback Design Associates all came together to create this amazing entrance that fits perfectly with our campus,” says Barnett. “We appreciate all their efforts to help us with this project to ‘orange up’ Tulsa.”
The next phase of the Signature Gateway project will include landscaping, street improvements and additional pedestrian lighting along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Detroit Avenue by the City of Tulsa. Preliminary work to move utilities is underway.
The Tulsa chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. recently awarded Flintco with the 2014 Excellence in Construction award for work on the Signature Gateway. In June, the University Center at Tulsa Authority and -Tulsa officials hosted a dedication for the Standpipe Hill Historical Marker. The granite marker details the history and lore surrounding the hill, which was also the location of Tulsa’s first water tower – a standpipe.
