OU Rowing Finishes Second at OU Invitational


OKLAHOMA – The University of Oklahoma women’s rowing team concluded the OU Invitational Sunday afternoon, finishing second overall in the event on the Oklahoma River. The Sooners racked up four varsity eight wins on the weekend and claimed four second varsity eight wins and three varsity four wins to tally 98 points.

“I thought we learned a lot this weekend,” Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “Multiple races allowed us to look at some different lineups which will benefit us in the coming weeks.”

The Sooners went undefeated in both sessions Sunday. OU claimed scoring wins over Creighton in the varsity four finishing with times of 8:50.150 (A), 9:22.250 (B) over Creighton’s 11:15.540. The second varsity eight finished with times of 7:32.000 (A) and 7:42.310 (B) defeating Creighton’s 8:20.460. The varsity eight (7:34.700) had a margin of more than 30 seconds over Creighton (8:08.550). The novice eight defeated Kansas 8:07.120 to 8:16.240. OU finished out the morning with 72 points.

Oklahoma competed against Kansas and in the afternoon session. The varsity team beat in every race by more than a 30 second margin. The varsity four raced two boats against , finishing with times of 8:41.460 (A) and 8:51.090 (B) over SMU’s 9:53.190. The second varsity eight finished in 7:47.560, defeating SMU’s 8:19.330. The first varsity eight clinched the sweep over with a time of 7:32.920 over SMU’s 8:03.230.

The novice eight raced two boats against Kansas, with both the A boat (8:09.210) and B boat (8:16.370) topping the Jayhawks (8:32.330).

San Diego won the two-day event, finishing with a perfect score of 104. While the Sooners did not face this weekend, the two teams meet April 2-3 at the San Diego Crew Classic.

“USD had a perfect record over the weekend,” Crain said. “Our one loss in the varsity four ended up being the difference. It will be great to go head-to-head against them in San Diego.”

Tulsa took third with 50 points, placed fourth (26), Kansas was fifth (22) and Creighton finished at the back of the pack with no points.
