OU’s Mueller to Start NCAA Regional Play Thursday
NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma women’s golfer Ellen Mueller will compete individually at the 2010 West Regional May 6-8 in Stanford, Calif. The 54-hole tournament begins Thursday morning at the 6,115-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
Mueller, a junior who was recently named to the 2009-10 All-Big 12 team, will be making her first post-season appearance and will be one of 123 competitors at the regional.
“The golf course is in great condition,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin today. “The key to scoring is staying in the fairways, which is one of Ellen’s strengths. Ellen’s early tee time should play to her advantage before the Bay Area winds pick up.”
Mueller, an Evansville, Ind., native, has a shot at recording the best single-season stroke average in OU history. In fact, her current 74.47 would set the school standard. She has finished in the top 25 of each tournament during the 2009-10 season, and six of her 12 tournament appearances resulted in top-10 finishes.
“After playing the practice round, I feel this course sets up well for my style of golf game,” said Mueller this morning. “Hitting fairways and playing to the middle of the greens will give me good birdie opportunities. I’m excited for the chance to play at the Regional.”
The West Regional features 24 teams and three individuals. Nine of the 24 squads are ranked in the top-25, most of any of the three regionals. The top eight teams and top two individuals from the region will advance to the Championships May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Mueller will be grouped with the two other individual competitors: North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson and Minnesota’s Teresa Puga. The group will tee off at 10:55 a.m. CT Thursday on hole No. 10.
