Golden Driller Stands Tall 50 Years
At one time, Tulsa was known as the “Oil Capital of the World.”
But Tulsa did not build Tulsa’s giant oilman. It was built by Mid-Continental Supply Company of Texas, which set him up in 1953 for the International Petroleum Exhibition at the Tulsa State Fairgrounds. Dubbed “The Golden Driller,” the giant roustabout resembled an oversized brass statuette, with a broad grin, a tin helmet tipped back at a rakish skew, and a gloved right hand raised in a kind of limp-wristed OK sign. The statue proved so popular that the Texas company returned six years later with a second temporary giant.

GO Plan Looks to Increase Transportation Options

Tulsa County Sheriff Race Heats Up for March 1
On March 1, a Tulsa County primary election will be held to elect its sheriff who, for the first time in 26 years, will not be Stanley Glanz. That will be followed by an April 5 special general election. The election will determine the individual who will complete Glanz’s term. Glanz resigned in September after he was indicted by a grand jury due to questions that arose after a volunteer deputy confused a gun for a tazor and shot and killed an unarmed black man.
TCC Foundation Names Lauren Brookey President
Lauren Brookey, vice president of external affairs at Tulsa Community College, was recently named president of the Foundation.
Tulsa City Council Goes South
Tulsa City Councilors toured District 7 on Tulsa’s southeast side Jan. 12. The tour showcased south Tulsa, focusing on new development and support of existing retail and housing, street issues, and changes to the face of south Tulsa. Councilor Anna America led the tour.
Tulsa Regional Chamber Chairman Inaugurated
READY TO : The Tulsa Regional Chamber inaugurated the 2016 Chairman of the Board Jeff Dunn Jan. 7. In his inaugural address, Dunn encouraged the audience to get serious about education funding, regional economic development strategies and the region’s OneVoice Legislative coalition efforts. “If education is our number one priority, don’t we owe ourselves this investment?” said Dunn, who will be featured in the March Newspapers.
