Tennis Courts Improving at LaFortune
The LaFortune Tennis Center at LaFortune Park in Tulsa is undergoing a $2.5 million expansion and renovation project. Approximately $1.2 million has been pledged through Operation Facelift, a citizen-driven campaign supported by Tulsa County Commissioner Fred Perry and Tulsa County.
Ochoa Leads Team SemGroup
Lorena Ochoa finished tied for eighth place at the MasterCard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta, earning $30,550 and 30 Team SemGroup points. Ochoa currently holds 255-point lead over second-place University of Tulsa graduate Stacy Prammanasudh.
The $25,000 charity Team SemGroup is in its third year and consists of nine top LPGA Tour professionals.
Tulsa 66ers’ Freddy Owens Looking Forward to Move
Freddy Owens looks at the empty box that will house the SpiritBank Event Center and sees wonderful possibilities. The team he works for, the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League, will move into the center next fall, and as the man responsible for marketing and public relations he sees all sorts of possibilities.
Summit Winners
Oral Roberts University hosted and won the 2008 Summit League Tournament at the UMAC in early March with a win over IUPUI. The men’s basketball team took home the 2008 regular season title also, winning 16 of their 18 games. Above, the team celebrates their tournament win.
USCAA Tournament
Rhema Bible College in Broken Arrow recently hosted the USCAA National Basketball Tournament. The Oakwood Ambassadors took home top honors, beating Florida College 90-76 in the championship game. In attendance during the tournament were, from left, Rhema Women’s Basketball Coach Olivia DiCamilli, Rhema player Larissa Brown, Rhema Bible Training Center President Kenneth W. Hagin, Rhema player Gabe White, Rhema Director of Operations Craig Hagin and Rhema Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Perry Schockley.
Tulsa Drillers Hope to Keep Pace with Springdale
Chuck Lamson can’t be blamed for looking east and wondering if Tulsa can keep up with Springdale, Ark.
Springdale, whose team will operate under the unwieldy moniker of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (a Kansas City Royals franchise that played the 2007 season in Wichita) is about to open Arvest Ballpark. It is a minor league baseball jewel with 6,500 fixed seats and room on the outfield grass for another 1,000. It will have playgrounds in center and left field for the kids and 25 luxury suites for the well-heeled ball fan.
Tournament Charities Named For SemGroup Championship
Tournament officials for the SemGroup Championship presented by John Q. Hammons have announced that proceeds from the 2008 event will benefit The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis, Family and Children Services of Oklahoma and DaySpring Villa, according to SemGroup president and CEO Tom Kivisto. The 8th annual LPGA Tour event returns to Cedar Ridge Country Club May 1-4.
Pat Jones Enjoying Broadcasting Career
Talkative Pat Jones remains in the limelight, though not as a visible college or professional football coach. Instead, Jones has established himself as one of the top radio and television sports broadcasters in the region.
Six Local Gymnasts Make National USA Gymnastics JumpStart Team
Six Oklahoma gymnasts who train at SSB Kids in Broken Arrow were named to this year’s JumpStart National Team. They earned the right to train at the JumpStart National Team Training Camp in Sacramento, Calif. this March with some of the best elite and Olympic coaches in the country.
Youth Rugby Program Starts at YMCA
The YMCA of Greater Tulsa is offering area youth an opportunity to learn the game of rugby. The curriculum for this YMCA program is a non-contact introduction to rugby that is suited for children ages 7-14 regardless of their gender, size, shape or ability. Classes will begin in February at the downtown branch.

Memphis players were surprised to see Elvis impersonator “Little-E” at the Tulsa game. Though Little E tried, he wasn’t enough as the undefeated Tigers prevailed, 56-41.
