Madonna Coming to Tulsa
Just days after the launch of Madonna’s highly-anticipated Rebel Heart Tour, Live Nation has announced that Madonna is adding more tour dates in Asia and North America. The new dates added to the 64-city world tour include first-ever concerts by the Material Girl in Taipei, Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, Louisville, San Antonio, Tulsa and Nashville, as well as her first concerts in Tokyo in a decade and additional dates in Mexico City and Houston. Tulsa Ballet Announces Additions to the Company
Tulsa Ballet Artistic Director, Marcello Angelini, proudly presents the roster for Tulsa Ballet’s 2015/16 Season. Tulsa Ballet’s Company features twenty-eight dancers from fourteen different countries. The selected artists were chosen from 850 national and international applicants during the course of an audition tour that included stops in New York, Japan, Amsterdam, London, Vienna, Stuttgart, Prague and Rome.
Andrés Franco Ready for Signature Symphony Season
In March, Colombia native Andrés Franco officially took the baton as conductor and artistic director of Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College. Franco is only the second music director in the 36-year history of the orchestra, following the retirement of Barry Epperley. Signature Symphony at includes 70 professional musicians who not only perform with the orchestra but also teach and coach music students at , other colleges and universities, and various public and private schools and studios in the area.
Wine and Roses Returns Sept. 25
Tulsa Garden Center’s An Evening of Wine and Roses will celebrate its annual event Friday, Sept. 25, 7-9:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden.
Tulsa State Fair Skyride Gets Facelift
As the Tulsa State Fair, Oct. 1-11, nears, anticipation for the rides and new unexpected food items is never far behind.
One ride that has been in existence on the fairgrounds as long as most people can remember and is one of the longest running in the country is the Von Roll Skyride.
The Fair recently entered into a 10-year partnership agreement with Don McClure, who owns and operates the Skyride belonging to the Minnesota State Fair and is part owner of Buck Hill ski lodge in Burnsville, Minnesota. McClure will help to fund the ongoing maintenance of Tulsa’s historic Skyride, which is one of only 11 still operating in the U.S.
Tulsa PAC 2015-16 Season Launches with ‘Spamalot’
Planning and publicity for the new season is well underway in August at the Tulsa . I count 89 booked shows, with many having multiple performances. That does not include SummerStage, which is sorted out at a later time, and other shows that will be added as the season progresses. The consistently hosts over 500 events each season, and this year will be no exception.
Ken Busby Advocates Tulsa, Rt. 66 ‘Experience’
Ken Busby is a flurry of energy. But within that constant movement, his love for Tulsa and the arts is clearly seen. So, it was quite fitting when he was announced in May as the executive director of the Route 66 Alliance. A large part of Busby’s focus for the foreseeable future will be the 44,000-square-foot Route 66 Alliance Interpretive Center – an “experience,” not a museum, Busby says – that will highlight the Mother Road, her stories and how Tulsa has played such a large role in her history.
Tulsa Ballet Will Tour Italy in 2016
Tulsa Ballet will present a series of performances throughout Italy in the spring of 2016, which will be the fourth international tour for Tulsa Ballet. The company made its international debut in 2002, when it performed as part of the Sintra Festival in Sintra, Portugal. In 2007, the company performed in Serbia and Croatia, and Oklahoma Governor, Brad Henry, issued a proclamation that deemed Tulsa Ballet an “Oklahoma Cultural Ambassador.” In 2008, the company traveled to Seoul, South Korea.
OK Mozart Celebrates Youth, Italy and Opera
Putting Oklahoma and Mozart back into the 2015 OK Mozart () Festival (June 6 – 13) with Italian flair proved to be an exhilarating venture for artistic director and conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos and the Amici New York Orchestra.
In Harmony
MUSIC PROGRAM: The Community Food Bank’s “Empty Bowls” fundraiser was held recently, where Harmony Project Tulsa students performed for more than 900 people. Harmony Project Tulsa is a music-based mentoring program that provides instruments and music lessons to local students. In May, the program celebrated its one-year anniversary. Harmony Project proponent Kathy Lafortune arranged for the children to perform at the event, saying, “This program will help keep our children from going down destructive paths of influence and, instead, help strengthen families and lift up children to be all that they can be through the universal language of music.”
Starlight Opens Season
In June, Starlight Concerts began its 69th season and its second summer season at Guthrie Green in downtown Tulsa’s Brady Arts District. Starlight’s professional groups are made up of a concert band and a jazz orchestra.
Sights, Sounds, Adventures Await in Bartlesville
I am making it a goal to focus less on booking trips to faraway destinations and more on exploring what immediately surrounds me. One place on my list is Bartlesville, less than an hour’s drive from Tulsa.
Local Officer Turns Novelist
Gary Neece, sergeant and 22-year veteran of the Tulsa Police Department, surprised even himself when he added author to his list of accomplishments. Neece’s introduction into the world of writing crime fiction began in 2008, when he was searching for a new hobby. “I just sat down and started writing,” says Neece, “and the first book just poured out.” A rough draft of his first book was finished within six months. While he originally had no intention of sharing his manuscript with anyone except close friends and colleagues, as he received positive feedback, he wondered if he might have the potential for a writing career.
BAPAC Announces 2015-16 Star-Studded Season
It’s lucky number seven for the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center and Kristin Chenoweth Theatre, as the seventh season of the Spotlight Series is celebrated for 2015-2016 with “Legends Alive,” highlighted by the triumphant stage performance of Liza Minnelli.
Woodcarving Event
AWARD–WINNING : Pictured is a woodcarving created by artist Bob Block that received past awards at annual Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association’s Woodcarvers World Show and Sale. The 38th annual event will be held June 12-13 at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center, 6836 S. Mingo Rd. Featured artists for this year’s two-day event are award-winning woodcarvers Stan and Jo McKenzie of Rogers, Arkansas, each with more than 40 years of experience.
