“Teachers, learners, incense burners, religious leaders and chronic bleeders, thieves and pirates on a ride, it’s a hippie commune bonafide.”
– Leon Russell, from Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Winning Lineup of Shows Slated for Local Venues
Tulsa continues its winning streak of solid entertainment with diverse and enticing options.
Prominent in the winner’s circle is Ringo Starr, who launches the U.S. leg of his current tour at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Sept. 1. A member of the most successful rock group of all time, Starr’s contributions to music helped define an era. So why is the Fab Four’s star drummer taking to the road for a multi-city tour? “Rolling Stone” rock critic David Wild wrote of the former Beatle, “Ultimately what’s most impressive about Ringo Starr isn’t what he’s been, but rather who he is.” Wild admires Starr’s “heart and soul, wit and wisdom.”
Community Lends a Hand to Tulsa’s Blues Man
“Laughter is the language of the soul.”
– Pablo Neruda
I begin with that quote for two reasons: First, to make myself sound smart and well read (although, full disclosure, I got it from a Simpson’s episode). The second reason is to make the following assertion: Pablo Neruda is full of s*#@!
Author’s Family Shares Fifth and Boston History
In 1903 my maternal grandfather, C.C. Cole arrived in Tulsa to start a lead, zinc and coal mining company with his older brother. J.R. Cole. As their business prospered, they bought a lot at the northwest corner of Fifth Street and Boston Avenue, where they built a two-story red brick building and called it the Cole Building. The Cole brothers used the second floor for their offices. These same offices were the setting for architect, designer and owner representative meetings when historic Boston Avenue Methodist Church was planned. The street level was let to a retail tenant.

Some buildings are worth writing about because of their excellent architectural design. Others are notable because of the events and celebrities that utilized the space there. The Brady Theater is one of the latter. Tulsa’s Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church a Departure from Classical Byzantine Architecture
The Greek Orthodox Church has a long history in Christianity. Some date its present beginnings to the 1054 AD “Great Schism” when it separated from the Catholic Church. Others would put this date much earlier. Regardless, this faith has developed church buildings with a distinct character in its more than 1,000-year history. The resulting architectural style is often called Byzantine. A key church that reflects this style is Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which is so well known that it is almost a symbol of the Greek Orthodox faith. Other famous Greek Orthodox Church buildings would be St. Mark in Venice and St. Basil in Moscow.
