On the third Monday in January, every four years, Americans gather to witness the validation of our unique democracy. This January I had the honor of standing alongside fellow Tulsans who came to Washington D.C. to view the inauguration of a new president. It was fitting that the same moment, we celebrated the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King and heard again the familiar words he spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial from decades past. But, on this day, those words spoken so many years ago, seemed to resonate with a force that reached all the way to the steps of the Unites States Capitol.

This year has flown by so quickly and now we are looking at a brand new year just around the corner. When I think of jazz vocalist Marilyn Maye, I think of her smoldering, honeyed tones, infused with impeccable phrasing, clarity of tone and pitch and clear diction. In addition, Ms. Maye is one heck of an entertainer and quite the storyteller or interpreter of the songwriter’s lyrics.

It was a great pleasure on Oct. 13 to attend the Oklahoma City-Houston Rockets exhibition game at the new BOK Center. The facility is very impressive and comfortable, and the 10,000 fans who came were entertained by not only the game and the skits during time outs and half time, but also by the BOK Center itself.

August 30 was a great day for all of us in Tulsa County and throughout the region as the magnificent BOK Center was officially opened with a ribbon cutting before thousands of future fans of events that the building will host.

Recently I received an impromptu invitation to fly out to Vegas and experience Elton John’s latest foray into musical magic on the Coliseum stage at Caesar’s Palace. He is alternating performances this year with Cher, Bette Midler and Jerry Seinfeld. (Sort of sounds like the choices in a “which-one-doesn’t-fit” questions, doesn’t it?)
