Food Bank Raises Hunger Awareness
The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma held its 21st annual Empty Bowls Hunger Awareness Dinner and Auction on April 25, with the goal of raising enough money to provide 2.4 million meals to feed those in need in Oklahoma and raise awareness of the hunger issues in the state.

FLATS AT ARCHER: Representatives of Comstar Advisors, C Star, Rupe Helmer Group and other stakeholders broke ground on April 11 for The Flats at Archer, an $11 million multi-family mixed-use project, to be located at 110 N. Boston Ave. The five-story, 62-unit property is expected to open in summer 2018.

CTCA Founder to Receive Horatio Alger Award
Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, has announced that Richard J Stephenson, founder and chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, has been selected for membership in the prestigious organization. Stephenson, widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts, global business leadership, and establishment of a new standard in personalized cancer care, joins 10 other esteemed business and civic leaders from across North America in receiving this honor in 2017. For the last 70 years, the Horatio Alger Award has been annually bestowed upon admirable leaders who have succeeded despite facing adversity and who are committed to higher education and charitable efforts in their local communities.
St. Bernard’s Dinner Extravaganza is May 13
The St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Annual Dinner Extravaganza will be Saturday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel. Tickets are $100 each, which includes dinner, music by The Grady Nichols Band, 99 drawings for $100 and the chance to win the 2017 Ford Mustang pictured at the right or $25,000.

Red Cross Calls for Type O Negative and AB Blood Donors
The American Red Cross has issued a call for individuals with type O negative and AB blood to make an appointment to give after severe winter weather in some parts of the country caused about 250 Red Cross blood drives to cancel in March, resulting in more than 8,500 uncollected blood donations.

Tulsa Library’s Writing Contest Begins Feb. 1
Entries for the 2017 Tulsa City-County Library’s annual Young People’s Creative Writing contest are being accepted Feb. 1-March 4. The contest is free to enter and open to ages 10-18 for those who live in Tulsa County, attend school in Tulsa County or have a nonresident library card.
Midtown Climbing Gym Breaks Ground
In January, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Climb Tulsa, a 17,500-square-foot climbing facility to be located at 4923 E. 32 St.
Climb Tulsa is scheduled for completion in late 2017 and will be one of the largest climbing gyms in the U.S., in the top 15 percent. The gym’s size and features will allow it to host national climbing competitions.

Nonprofit Gives Hope to Incarcerated Women
Christy VanCleave knows firsthand the challenges that individuals, particularly women, face when reintegrating into society after serving a prison sentence.
After completing her sentence, VanCleave continued to visit local prisons as part of a church group, and “I saw the same people coming back into prison over and over again,” she says.
