PR Firm to Host Seminar on Social Media and Public Affairs


Schnake Turnbo Frank | PR ( | PR) will present New Media University: Under the Dome, Social Media and State Government from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Jan. 26 at the Presbyterian Health Foundation Conference Center.

The seminar will offer an overview on how social media platforms are used to discuss and change public policy by state legislators, elected officials, government agencies and employees, special interest groups and the general public. Participants will learn tools and information for a cost-effective way to communicate with and engage policymakers and community leaders in real time.

“Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are important ways that communication is taking place at the State Capitol on issues that affect all of us,” said Mike Koehler, new media director for | PR. “We can no longer ignore that social media platforms are being utilized more and more as a method of distributing public information and engaging lawmakers.”

Koehler will lead the seminar, along with Karen Wicker, senior vice president for | PR. The seminar will also feature a broad-based panel of legislative experts, State Capitol news reporters and new media professionals. Panel members include Oklahoma State Reps. Joe Dorman (D-Rush Springs) and Jason Murphey (R-Guthrie) as well as news reporters Dick Pryor (), Paul Monies (The Oklahoman) and Michael Cross ( radio).

“Social media has become an important part of learning what your constituents want and how you share information with them about how their business is being done at the Capitol,” said Murphey. “They, in turn, can use it to make their voices heard by the people they have elected to represent them.”
