‘Riverfield Rocks Street Party’ May 2

Riverfield Country Day School will host its third annual “Riverfield Rocks Street Party” featuring nine student-led bands on Friday, May 2. The free event is open to the public and will be held on the school’s 120-acre campus located at 2433 W. 61st St. in Tulsa.

Concessions and commemorative apparel will be available for purchase. Street Party benefits the Riverfield Rocks program, one of the most unique and progressive school band programs in the country.

There are currently five bands comprised of middle and upper school students in Riverfield’s rock program. Over the course of the school year, each band works up a set of songs by memory and performs several concerts, culminating with the Street Party in May. The Street Party gives students an opportunity to perform in front of hundreds of people with a large, elevated stage, professional lighting and sound reinforcement. Many members have professionally recorded original songs and perform outside of school with other bands. In fact, Riverfield students perform with Big Sleep, Street Party headlining band and People’s Choice Winner at the Tulsa World’s Satellite Battle of the Bands.

“Street Party is definitely the highlight of the year for band members,” says Paul Knight, director of the Riverfield Rocks program. “We had over 600 people in attendance in 2007 and are looking forward to adding to that number this year.”

Riverfield Rocks is the first program of its kind in Oklahoma. The program uses modern and classical rock music to teach the fundamentals of musical performance, theory, expression and songwriting in an environment that is both supportive and moderately competitive. The creative environment fostered at Riverfield makes this success possible.

Riverfield Country Day School was founded in 1984 and in a non-profit, independent school with no religious affiliation, offering school year and summer programs for children, pre-school through upper school.
