Rockies Load up in 2010 Draft


DENVER — The Colorado Rockies concluded the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by selecting their final 20 players today in rounds 31-50. The Rockies made a total of 51 draft selections over the three days of the draft.

Overall in the draft, the Rockies selected 27 pitchers, 9 outfielders, 13 infielders and 2 catchers. Of the pitchers, 7 are left-handed pitchers and 20 are right-handed. The team selected 34 players from a four-year university or junior college and 17 high school players. A complete list of Rockies draft picks are on the final page of this release.

Notes on Rockies Draft Picks of Day One:

With the club’s first round selection (26th overall) the Rockies selected outfielder Kyle Parker out of Clemson University. With the club’s second selection (47th overall, supplemental round) the Rockies selected RHP Peter Tago out of Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Calif.

Parker, 20, 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, has hit .356 (79-for-222) with 15 doubles, 20 home runs, 63 RBI and 78 runs scored. He has a .484 on-base percentage and a .694 slugging percentage so far this season. Parker was rated as the 37th best player available for the draft by Baseball America. Baseball America also rated Parker the 2nd best prospect from the state of South Carolina. Parker’s Clemson team is playing for a spot in the College World Series at a Super Regional in Clemson, SC this weekend against Alabama.

Parker is also a quarterback for the Tigers football team, and he started all 14 of the team’s games in 2009. He completed 205-of-369 passes for 2,526 yards and 20 touchdowns. He led the Tigers to a Music City Bowl Championship over Kentucky University in his first year as the team’s starting quarterback. Parker is the first student athlete to throw for 20 touchdowns, and hit 20 home runs in the same school year in NCAA history.

Tago, 17, 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, went 10-3 with a 2.77 ERA (86.0 ip, 34 er) with 21 walks and 97 strikeouts for Dana Hills High School as a senior in 2010. Tago was ranked as the 18th best right-handed pitcher available in the draft by Baseball America. The same publication also rated Tago the 36th best player overall in the draft, and the 5th best prospect from the state of California.

In Tago’s final start in high school he tossed a 7.0-inning complete game in which he struck out 13 and walked just two batters. Tago struck out 10 batters or more in four of his 14 starts this season for Dana Hills.

Notes from Rockies Draft Picks Rounds 2-10:

Chad Bettis, RHP: The Rockies second round selection / 76th overall out of Texas Tech University…Bettis, 21, went 7-4 with a 4.41 ERA (85.2 ip, 42 er) in 24 game/7 starts for the Red Raiders as a junior in 2010…Bettis had 102 strikeouts and just 33 walks…he finished 4th in the Big 12 Conference with his 102 strikeouts, and his 10.72 strikeouts per game was the 5th best mark in the conference this season…though he made 7 starts, he still finished tied for 4th in the Big 12 with 10 saves in 2010…was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team this past season…Bettis spent three seasons with the Red Raiders, splitting time between the starting rotation and late inning relief…was rated as the 33rd best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 16th best right-handed pitcher in the draft by the same publication…Baseball America also rated Bettis the 5th best prospect overall from the state of Texas…Bettis is a native of Lubbock, and was originally drafted in the eighth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros.

Joshua Rutledge, SS: The Rockies third round selection / 107th overall out of the University of Alabama…Rutledge, 21, batted .365 (104-for-285) with 16 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 63 runs and 69 RBI for the Crimson Tide as the team’s every-day shortstop…he also stole 15 bases in 18 attempts, and had a .945 OPS (.540 slugging percentage, .405 on-base percentage)…Rutledge finished 10th in the SEC with his .365 batting average, 9th in runs scored (63), 2nd in hits (104), tied for 4th in RBI (69) and 4th in total bases (154)…Rutledge was named to the All-SEC First Team in 2010 as well…Baseball America rated Rutledge the 6th best player available for the draft from the state of Alabama…Rutledge will play fellow Rockies draft pick Kyle Parker this weekend in a Super Regional for a spot in the College World Series.

Russell Wilson, 2B: The Rockies fourth round selection / 140th overall out of North Carolina State University…Wilson, 21, batted .306 (30-for-98) with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and 25 runs scored in 47 games/25 games started for the Wolfpack this season…Wilson played in both the outfield and a 2nd base for NC State…Wilson was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 41st round of the 2007 MLB draft…Wilson has been the starting quarterback for the NC State football team for each of the last two seasons, and he started 12 games for the team last season, completing 224-of-378 passes for 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns…he was also the 3rd leading rusher on the team, and finished the season with 260 yards on 103 attempts and 4 touchdowns…Wilson’s 31 touchdown passes last season ranked 4th nationally in NCAA…Wilson ranks 5th in school history in career passing yards (4,982), and 3rd in touchdowns (48).

Joshua Slaats, RHP: The Rockies fifth round selection / 170th overall out of the University of Hawaii…Slaats, 21, went 5-4 with a 3.77 ERA (74.0 ip, 31 er) with 33 walks and 75 strikeouts in 17 games/16 starts for Hawaii in 2010…the junior, led the Warriors in innings pitched, start and strikeouts…he held opponents to a .262 average (72-for-275) this season…pitched in relief in his first two years at Hawaii, including late relief as a sophomore in 2010, when he notched 4 saves…Slaats led the University of Hawaii to an NCAA tournament appearance and the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship…Slaats was rated by Baseball America as the 78th best prospect in the draft, as well as the top player available from the Pacific Rim (Alaska and Hawaii) by the same publication…Baseball America also rated Slaats the 39-best right-handed pitcher available for the draft.

Jared Simon, OF: The Rockies sixth round selection / 200th overall out the University of Tampa…Simon, 21, batted .361 (75-for-208) with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs and 66 RBI…Simon had 28 walks, and a .456 on-base percentage, with a .649 slugging percentage…he led his team in doubles, home runs and RBI…Simon ranked tied for first in the Sunshine State Conference with 66 RBI, 3rd in doubles, tied for 6th in home runs, 4th in total bases, 6th in slugging percentage, and 8th in on-base percentage.

Kraig Sitton, LHP: The Rockies seventh round selection / 230th overall out of Oregon State University…Sitton, 21, went 1-2 with one save and a 3.89 ERA (37.0 ip, 16 er) in a team high 26 games/1 start for the Beavers in 2010…Sitton allowed just 13 walks, and had 30 strikeouts in his 16 appearances…opponents batted just .239 (33-for-138) against him in 2010…Sitton was previously drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2009 MLB draft.

Corey Dickerson, OF: The Rockies eighth round selection / 260th overall out of Meridian Community College (MS)…Dickerson, 21, batted .459 (84-for-183) with 18 doubles, 3 triples, 21 home runs, 71 RBI and 10 stolen bases…Dickerson was a Junior College All-American for Meridian CC in 2010…this is the 2nd consecutive year in which the Rockies have drafted Dickerson, as the club also selected him in the 29th round of the 2009 MLB draft.

Geoff Parker, RHP: The Rockies ninth round selection / 290th overall out of Florida State University…Parker, 21, went 4-1 with a 4.60 ERA (72.1 ip, 37 er) with 38 walks and 64 strikeouts in 28 games/9 starts for the Seminoles in 2010…opponents hit just .265 (72-for-272) against him this season…has pitched regularly for the Seminoles as a reliever and a starter since his freshman season in 2008…was named a freshman All-American by Ping! Baseball following his freshman season in 2008…Parker’s Florida State team is hosting a Super Regional against Vanderbilt this weekend for the opportunity to play in the 2010 College World Series.

Brett Tanos, INF: The Rockies 10th round selection / 320th overall out of Santa Ana College (Calif.)…Tanos, 21, batted .313 (51-for-163) with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 40 games for Santa Ana College in 2010…he led the team in doubles, home runs, runs (53), walks (22) and slugging percentage (.638) this season…Tanos was named to the All-Orange County Conference Team this season.

Additional Notes from Day Two of Rockies Draft:

With the Rockies 22nd round selection the club drafted IB/C Mark Tracy out of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA…Tracy is the son of Rockies Manager Jim Tracy…the Rockies also drafted Mark in the 49th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

The Rockies selected LHP Marco Gonzales with the club’s 29th round selection…Gonzales is a Ft. Collins resident and a member of the last four State Championships for Rockies Mountain High School…Gonzales is believed to be the only pitcher in Colorado State history to start, and win, four straight State Championship games.
