Seven Cowgirls Named Academic All-Big 12
Stillwater, Okla. — Seven members of Oklahoma State’s softball squad have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team, it was announced today by the Big 12 Conference office. Four Cowgirls were named first team while three others garnered second-team honors.
Sophomore shortstop Chelsea Garcia (secondary education/mathematics) was one of four student-athletes nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is also a first-team Academic All-District VI selection.
Senior rightfielder Megan Castle (nutritional science/allied health) received first-team honors for the third-consecutive season, while senior catcher Sam Heinlein (elementary education and sociology) received second-team honors last year. Junior pitcher Sarah Odom (secondary education/social studies) were also named to the first team for the second-straight season.
second-team honorees include senior outfielder Breana Casaus (university studies-educational psychology & health emphasis) and senior pitcher Anna Whiddon (career & technical education). Junior third-baseman Mariah Gearhart (sports media) made the second team for the second-consecutive year.
This marks the 17th time in the last 22 seasons that Oklahoma State has had at least five players selected to the academic all-conference team. Since 1984, has had 138 student-athletes named to an academic all-league squad (Big Eight or Big 12), including 97 first-team selections.
Oklahoma State will face Missouri in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Big 12 Championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the alternate field of the Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
