Shump, Brooks Hit NCAA Auto Marks

LINCOLN, Neb. — The women’s shot put field at the 2011 Indoor Championships will have a familiar look to it with two Sooners automatically qualifying for the event at the Husker Invitational Saturday. Karen Shump, who had already qualified for the event, and Tia Brooks both hit automatic qualifying marks in the event as they finished first and second, respectively. The duo both earned All-America honors in the event in 2010 as Shump finished fourth and Brooks fifth at the 2010 Indoor Championships.

Shump’s winning throw of 56-10.00 (17.32) is just off her school record of 56-10.75 (17.34) from the Jan. 22 J.D. Martin Invitatonal as the sophomore eclipsed the automatic qualifying standard for the third time in as many weeks.

Brooks, meanwhile, extender her personal best in the event with a throw of 55-5.75 (16.91). Brooks entered the weekend with a PR of 54-11.25 (16.74), a mark she recorded at last year’s Indoor Championships. The throw is second in Oklahoma history behind Shump’s program record.

Remuro Henry and Daniel Nix captured two of the top three spots in the men’s 400-meter run Saturday as Henry took second with a time of 47.98 and Nix was third with a time of 48.00.

Also at the meet Saturday, Eric Bailey finished second in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:09.87.
