Singh Claims Husker Invitational Weight Throw Title
LINCOLN, Neb. — K.P. Singh won his first event title of the 2011 season Friday night at the Husker Invitational while Scottesha Miller led a group of athletes qualifying for Saturday running finals. Miller was the night’s top qualifier in both the 60- and 200-meter dash while Jeremy Rankin moved on in the men’s 60-meter dash and Remuro Henry and Daniel Nix advanced in the 400-meter dash.
Singh led the men’s weight throw from wire-to-wire after recording a throw of 67-3.00 (20.50) on his first attempt before improving to a winning throw of 68-5.00 (20.85) on his fourth attempt. The 2010 Big 12 champion in the event, Singh won the event by over three feet as Nebraska’s Brett Suckstorf was second with a throw of 65-2.25 (19.87).
Miller led all women in qualifying in both the 60- and 200-meter dash. Miller won the fifth and final heat of the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.34, just off her season best of 7.33. Miller returned to the track just a short time later in the 200 and again led the field with a time of 23.83.
Alexandra Acker became just the fourth female pole vaulter in Oklahoma history to clear the 13-foot barrier as she finished fourth in the event with a clearance of 13-0.25 (3.97). The height is the fourth best in OU history. Acker was able to clear the height on her first attempt but was unable to clear 13-4.25 (4.07).
Both Henry and Nix automatically qualified for Saturday’s finals in the men’s 400-meter dash by winning their respective heats Henry won the event’s second heat with a time of 48.39 while Nix won the 10th prelim with a time of 48.68.
Rankin qualified for the finals of the men’s 60-meter dash as he clocked a time of 6.84 to win the event’s fourth heat to automatically qualify for Saturday’s finals.
Bailey Wagner recorded the second-longest throw in Oklahoma history in the women’s weight throw as she hit a mark of 57-8.25 (17.58). The mark was over a foot better than her previous best of 56-3.75 (17.16). Wagner finished seventh overall in the event Friday night.
