Sooner Women Best in Nation in Academics
The University of Oklahoma women’s track and field team was honored as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year the organization announced Thursday. The award comes after the Sooners finished fourth at the 2011 Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.03.
“We’re extremely proud of this award,” said Oklahoma head track and field coach Martin Smith. “This is reflective of an excellent effort by our student-athletes who work hard in the classroom and throughout the season on the track. It’s also a great compliment for (academics coordinator) Kasie Tamayo and her support staff and our coaches who are mentors and provide leadership and motivation for these young ladies. I’m very proud of everyone for this honor.”
The Oklahoma women were one of 11 Big 12 teams to earn all-academic team honors and were led by javelin champion Brittany Borman. Borman was one of eight Sooner women named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team one week ago as Kelsey Brown, Jesica Ejesieme, Jessica Engel, Kelsey Poljansek, Kristen Rice, Karen Shump and Sherine Wells were all named to the that team.
The Oklahoma program was represented on both the men’s and women’s All-Academic lists as 15 student-athletes were individually honored and the OU men earned All-Academic team honors on Wednesday.
