Sooners in Second Through Two Rounds in Waco

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team shot a two-round 610 (+34) Monday and stands in second place at the 16-team Baylor Spring Invitational in Waco, Texas. The Sooners trail Baylor by six strokes at the par-72 Twin Rivers Golf Club with one round remaining.

OU head coach Veronique Drouin watched her team record a first-round 297 (+9) for a four-stroke lead before carding the fifth-best second round with a 313 (+25).

“The girls played solid this morning, but we saw the conditions get a little tougher in the afternoon,” Drouin said. “It was good to see Taylor (Schmidt) and Ryanne (Elmer) play well in the morning, and Ellen (Mueller) was consistent for us all day. The girls have to focus on the positives from the morning round and carry those into tomorrow’s round.”

The Sooners lead third-place Arkansas-Little Rock by five shots and fourth-place Texas Tech by six strokes. Oregon, ranked No. 36 nationally, and Kansas State share fifth place and are 14 shots behind OU. Baylor’s Jaclyn Jansen leads the tournament individually with a 1-over par 145.

Ellen Mueller paced the Sooners on day one, firing a 73 (+1) and 76 (+3) in the first and second rounds, respectively. The junior stood in fifth place on the leaderboard after 18 holes and jumped to third following the second round. Mueller is four shots out of the lead.

Freshman Taylor Schmidt, who shot a team-best 72 in the morning for third place, dropped to ninth after her 10-over 82 in the afternoon. Her even-par first round was a season best and tops for OU on the day.

Senior Andrea Sellmeyer carded solid rounds of 77 (+5) and 78 (+6) for a 36-hole score of 155 (+11) and is in 14th place.

Senior Chelsey Collins bolted 20 spots up the leaderboard from round one after a 5-over 77 second. Collins, who carded a first-round 83 (+11) is tied for 43rd place. Fellow senior Ryanne Elmer is tied for 50th with a two-round 163 (+19). Elmer’s first-round 75 (+3) was a season low and was highlighted by four consecutive birdies.

The final round of the Baylor Spring Invitational will commence Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. CT with live scoring available at www.golfstat.com.
