Sooners Nab Second Place at Baylor Spring Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team recorded a second-place finish on Tuesday at the 16-team Baylor Spring Invitational. The Sooners posted a final-round 305 (+17) en route to a three-round 915 (+51) at the 6,394-yard, par-72 Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Texas. Host Baylor won the tournament with a three-round 904 (+40).

The Sooners, who recorded their second runner-up finish of the season, came in nine strokes in front of third-place Texas Tech (915), 11 strokes in front of fourth-place 35th-ranked Oregon (926) and 12 strokes ahead of fifth-place Arkansas-Little Rock (927). Jaclyn Jensen of Baylor won medalist honors with a three-round 220 (+4).

Ellen Mueller once again led the Sooners. A junior, Mueller notched her fourth top-five performance of the season (seventh of her career) with her third-place performance in Waco. She shot a 2-over-par 74 in Tuesday’s final round en route to a three-round 223 (+7). Mueller was steady all day, recording 15 pars, one birdie, one bogey and one double-bogey.

Notching her first career top-10 finish was freshman Taylor Schmidt. Schmidt, who had a team-high three birdies on the day, tied for seventh place after carding a final-round 76 (+3). She finished with a three-round 230 (+14).

Senior Andrea Sellmeyer tied for 15th with a solid 77 (+5) on Tuesday and a three-round 232 (+16). It marked Sellmeyer’s third top-20 finish of the season. Senior Chelsey Collins inked a final-round 79 (+7) and a 54-hole 239 (+23) to share 35th place, while Ryanne Elmer, another senior, carded a final-round 78 (+6) and three-round 241 (+25) for 42nd place. Elmer registered six birdies over the two-day event.

With the Big 12 Championship in Norman drawing near, OU head coach Veronique Drouin believes the Baylor Spring Invitational provided a great opportunity for the Sooners to prepare for hosting the season-closing conference tournament.

“It was great to be in contention today,” Drouin said. “We were battling closely with Baylor all day. This is exactly the type of performance that we needed to have before heading into postseason.

“Ellen had another great performance. Taylor had her first top-10 finish of the season and that should give her the confidence she needs heading into her first conference tournament. We are really excited to be hosting Big 12’s next week, and hope that we will have a lot of fan support.”

The 2010 Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship will take place April 23-25 (Friday-Sunday) at the 6,327-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
