Super Bowl Site Hit with Snow, Ice in Other Parts of South
State College, Pa. February 2011 — AccuWeather reports snow is also falling at the site of this Sunday’s Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas.
From 1 to 6 inches blanketed the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Thursday night into Friday midday.
A wintry mix of snow and ice will make for rough travel throughout the day Friday across northeastern Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley. A bit of snow was also falling on Oklahoma City on the northwest fringe of the storm.
Residents from Brownsville, Texas, to Lake Charles, La., are awakening to the unusual mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.
A dangerous accumulation of ice, was snarling travel all along the Texas-Gulf coast region.
Up to a few thousand people in the lower Rio Grande Valley were without power Thursday nig
ht due to an ice buildup on trees and power lines, combined with locally gusty winds.
For the most part the ice buildup on trees and utility lines in the south central states has not been heavy enough to cause widespread outages.
It takes only a thin coating of ice on roads, bridges and sidewalks to lead to hazardous conditions. These conditions have been widespread from coastal Texas through northern Alabama with the storm, leading to scores of accidents.
Officials in Corpus Christi closed the entire city’s interstate system Thursday night due to ice buildup. Some highways across the lower Rio Grande Valley and farther north in Houston were also closed.
While the snow and ice will taper off this morning along the I-45 corridor from Dallas to Houston, travelers farther east in northern Louisiana, Arkansas and western Mississippi will continue to be impacted.
Reduced visibilities, snow-covered roadways and slick spots will be encountered by motorists on I-49, I-20 and I-30.
An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow, which in many locations is greater than the normal amount in an entire winter, can be expected from Tyler, Texas, to Little Rock, Ark., today.
A light mix of rain and snow is also likely in Nashville, Tenn., by the afternoon, with more significant snow expected in the Northeast Saturday.
