More than 1,000 supporters from the greater Tulsa community helped kick off United Way’s 2010 Campaign at the 19th Annual Day of Caring Friday, Sept. 10, at ONEOK Field.

The program included the premiere of the 2010 campaign video, a contest for two iPads, two $250 Visa gift cards and other prizes, as well as the Trailblazer companies reporting their campaign results.

The 14 Trailblazer companies, who run early campaigns to set the momentum for the whole campaign, announced their combined total of $3,416,278. This is 14 percent of the total $24 million goal, and 13 percent over the original Trailblazer goal.

The 2010 Trailblazer companies were Bank of Oklahoma, N.A., Coldwell Banker Select, Explorer Pipeline, Flint Energy Services, Inc., Frederic Dorwart Lawyers, Jim Norton Toyota, McAfee & Taft, Melton Truck Lines, ONEOK, Inc., SouthCrest Hospital, T.D. Williamson, Inc., Video Gaming Technologies, Inc., American Red Cross (a partner agency) and Family & Children’s Services (a partner agency).

After the Kickoff program, over 3,500 volunteers from more than 135 companies worked all day to complete projects at TAUW’s 61 partner agencies. This year, almost 350 different projects were finished, from painting, landscaping and office work to ping pong tournaments and arts projects with children and with seniors. Companies with the leading numbers of volunteers were Williams, 525; Bank of Oklahoma, N.A., 267; QuikTrip, 208; Level 3, 140; ONEOK, Inc., 125; Tulsa Technology Center, 116; Magellan Midstream Partners, 102; Tulsa Community College, 95; American Airlines/TWU Local 514, 80; and Downtown, 67. The $24,067,551 goal for the 2010 campaign was set after nearly 150 volunteers invested four months and 8,000 hours carefully analyzing the community’s most pressing needs. The annual campaign will run through Nov. 11.

The Tulsa Area United Way provides services to more than 726,000 annually through its 61 partner agencies in Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Wagoner and Tulsa counties. For more information, call at 583-7171 or visit www.tauw.org.
