Theatre Tulsa Closes 91st Season with ‘The Sound of Music’


Theatre Tulsa will close its historic 91st season with the beloved family classic “The Sound of Music.”

Though it is mostly known from the classic 1965 film starring Julie Andrews, this production goes back to the original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to bring a fresh yet familiar take on the show.

“This is a timeless story, with unforgettable music and characters. People who know the movie by heart are going to be a little surprised at what the original offers too,” said Sara Phoenix, artistic director of Theatre Tulsa.

The cast stars Kelsey Kemper as Maria, David Lawrence as Captain VonTrapp, Kristin Harding as Elsa, Jeremy Stevens as Max Detweiler and John Tupy as Rolf.

The cast also includes: Alden Fuller, Angie McLemore, Anna Myers, Annette Murray, Blake Bovasso, Blythe McLemore, Caroline Brian, Christine Woodard, Eleeza Waggoner-Guard, Emily Hedgecock, Emma Petherick, Grayson Warlick, Kari Coffman, Katherine Patz, Kevin Willis, Maddie Riggin, Madeline Addis, Melissa Eads, Paige Minnich, Reese Buchert, Samuel Robson, Sarah Smith, Tasha McCabe, Terri Amstutz, Tresa Waggoner, Kendall Griffith, Danica Whitman, Karleena Riggs, Cherish Mason, Scott Radford, Tanner Luetjen and Hannah Finnegan, all from Tulsa.

Other area actors include: Sarah Foster and Elisa Gudgel of Bixby; Tamara Faylor, George Willson, Tuesday Weidenfelder and Madison Starkweather of Broken Arrow; Sydney Cuttler of Claremore; Abby Boegh of Jenks; Blake Simpson of Kellyville; Kaitie Bryan and Sally Allen of Owasso; and Layla Fears and Eliza Fears of Sand Springs

The show is directed by Sara Phoenix, with musical direction from Jeremy Stevens and choreography by Kelsi Neil.

“The Sound of Music” is based on the true-life memoir of Maria von Trapp, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers,” and features several songs that are now consider American musical standards, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

Theatre Tulsa’s production opens May 16 and runs for two weekends through May 25 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
