Three Tulsa Men’s Tennis Players Selected to NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships
TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa men’s tennis team had three players earn bids into the Singles and Doubles Championships as announced today by the Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee.
Freshman Marcelo Arevalo and sophomore Ashley Watling were selected to play in the 64-player singles draw, and senior Philip Stephens and Watling were chosen to play in the 32-team doubles field.
Arevalo earned an at-large selection as the nation’s 42nd-ranked singles player. He owns an 8-6 record in the No. 1 position this season, including three wins against players currently ranked in the Top 30.
Watling, the 60th-ranked player in country, was an at-large selection with a 20-10 record this season. He went 10-5 in the No. 2 position and compiled a 7-3 mark against nationally-ranked opponents.
Stephens and Watling earned Conference USA’s automatic bid into the tournament as the nation’s 24th-ranked team. The duo is 22-8 overall with a 17-4 mark in the No. 1 position this season. Stephens participated in the Doubles Championships last season with partner Arnau Brugues.
The singles and doubles competition will take place May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship on May 21-25.
