TPS Appoints Gil Cloud as Interim Athletic Director

INTERM DIRECTOR: Gil Cloud was named interim athletic director for Tulsa Public Schools
Tulsa Public Schools announced Feb. 6 that it would appoint Gil Cloud as interim athletic director. Mr. Cloud assumed duties effective Tues., Feb. 7.
“We are delighted that Gil has decided to join us on an interim basis as we begin the process of hiring for the full-time athletic director position,” says Kevin Burr, associate superintendent of secondary schools. “Gil has a lengthy track record of success in both high school and college athletics, and will be a powerful asset to as we focus on finding the right individual to take our athletic program into the future.”
Cloud currently serves as president of Premier Collegiate Consulting, , providing consulting services to colleges, universities and public schools. Most notably, he has served as director of athletics for Northeastern State University of Tahlequah, from 1994 – 2000, but has served in a similar capacity with Upper Iowa University (Fayette, Iowa) and Arkansas Tech University (Russellville, Ark.). Cloud also has experience in high school athletics, having worked as athletic director for Union Public Schools (1976-1991) and Guthrie Public Schools (1991-1994). He has previously served as head football coach at McAlester High School, as well as a defensive coach at Kansas State University and Cameron University (Lawton, Okla.).
On Jan. 26, the district announced the appointment of an advisory group to assist the Office of Secondary Schools in the search for a permanent athletic director. On the advisory group are: Mike Mims, assistant principal, Booker T. Washington High School; Stacey Vernon, principal, Will Rogers College High School; Michael Parrish, head men’s basketball coach, Edison High School; Thad Leonard, owner, Carl Leonard & Sons; Bob Hurley, owner, Bob Hurley Chevrolet; and Gil Cloud, interim athletic director, .
Burr says he expects to make a final recommendation for athletic director to the board by May 1. “We have already received interest from at least a dozen highly-qualified candidates, and I expect we will receive many more,” says Burr. “We will have our pick of some of the very best talent that is currently available, and look forward to the time we can make an announcement.”
In the interest of applicant confidentiality, Burr says the district will not be announcing finalists for the athletic director position. “Only when we have a final recommendation in place for athletic director will we make a public announcement.”
