New Efforts Made by Union to Save American Airlines

The local Transport Workers Union announced today a new plan to keep American Airlines jobs in Tulsa as the air carrier continues through bankruptcy proceedings.
A new website, www.isupportamericanjobs.com has been launched to bring awareness and support of the many families in the area that rely on the jobs.
The announcement comes nearly two months after American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection. The airline employs about 7,000 workers in Tulsa.
Local union leaders have said the salaries and benefits of the Tulsa workers could be in jeopardy during the bankruptcy process, and city leaders are considering what incentives could keep the maintenance base open.

Union members say pilots and flight attendants have already given back $1 billion a year in salaries and benefits to help the company deal with its debt.
The 6,555 jobs at American Airlines’ maintenance base (AA) in Tulsa support 3,675 additional jobs throughout the Tulsa-area economy.
AA employment accounts for 1.6 percent of total employment in the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area (Tulsa ), and 0.4 percent of total employment in Oklahoma.
The jobs at AA support total Tulsa- income of nearly $740 million and sales of $2.7 billion. By itself, AA contributes 15 percent to gross metro product, the value of all goods and services produced in the Tulsa .
