Tulsa Downs Southern Miss, 75-71


James Woodard tallied 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricane past the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 75-71, in Conference action at the Reynolds Center.

Woodard was just 4-of-13 from the field but made 9-of-10 at the free-throw line for Tulsa (7-9, 2-0 C-), which has won three in a row. Pat Swilling scored 17 points for the hosts, while Rashad Ray and D’Andre Wright netted 10 points apiece.

For (14-3, 1-1), which snapped a five-game winning streak, Jerrold Brooks poured in 15 points, Michael Craig registered 10 points and nine rebounds and Daveon Boardingham and Neil Watson put up 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Tulsa shot just 37 percent from the field in the first half, but was even worse at 30.8 percent, as the Golden Hurricane took a 32-28 lead into intermission.

Both teams improved from the field after halftime, Tulsa to 46.2 percent and to 53.6 percent. After trailing by as many as 13 midway through the frame, the Golden Eagles climbed back to make their deficit just two with 10 seconds left, but the Golden Hurricane put the game on ice when Ray converted 2-of-2 at the foul line on the other end.

Tulsa outscored at the foul line, 24-17, and won the takeaway battle, 11-8.
