TU GREATS: Ken Hayes, left, joined by his assistant coach John Rendek, was recently inducted into the University of Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame.
Hayes coached seven years at TU and posted a 117-65 record. He began his Tulsa career with an 18-2 record and ranking as high as 7th nationally. That season, they beat Cincinnati, Louisville and Drake, finished ranked 3rd in the league and earned a birth in the NIT Tournament. Hayes was a two time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
In 1975, Hayes’ team beat the 3rd ranked Louisville Cardinals. This win is still tabbed as the highest ranked opponent Tulsa has ever beaten. In his career, he coached 10 all-conference selections, five All-Ammericans and had eight players drafted in professional basketball. Hayes was inducted with the 1945 Hurricane football team and Jerry Ostroski, TU football All-American who played with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
