Tulsa Advertising History Highlighted at ADDYs

PAST SILVER ADDY WINNERS

When the American Advertising Federation Tulsa () committee began planning for this year’s event, they quickly learned that it was also the 75th Anniversary of the rebirth of the Tulsa Ad Club.

In 1937, 25 men re-launched the Tulsa Chapter of the Advertising Federation of America, informally known as the Tulsa Ad Club, after going quiet during the depression.

That means this year’s Awards have a special meaning to the advertising industry, a reason to celebrate 75 years. Very few volunteer organizations are able to claim a 75th anniversary milestone; and, in monumental fanfare, the annual Awards celebration was a standing- room-only event Jan. 21 at The Mayo Hotel.

The Mayo was the chosen event venue to pay special tribute to the very first s, also held at The Mayo. The very first event was held in 1968 and was founded by Ad Club’s pioneer woman, Cecille Bales, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award during the night’s festivities.

The Awards is a creative competition to recognize the professionals from the advertising industry including advertising agencies, graphic design shops, video production studios, television and radio stations, and advertising students all across northeast Oklahoma. More than 200 professionals and students gathered to see who had been named the Best of the Best. Guests were also treated to a rare glimpse into the history of Tulsa’s Ad Club. Special guests included several of the past Silver winners including Ken Greenwood (1969), Cecille Bales (1971), Dick Schmitz (1972), Ron Fleming (1973), Bob Hawks (1984), Rick Rodgers (1989), Steve Turnbo (1993), Bill Hinkle (1994), Peggy George (1996), Ann Metcalf (1998), Vic Bailey (1999), Pat Bryson (2002), Steve Bright (2003), Kerry Walsh (2004), Steve Kennedy (2007), Jimmy Bloyed (2010), and Rosie Hinkle (2011).

The top award of the evening was the Silver — highly regarded as the top professional award in the industry. Only one person each year is awarded such a high honor. This year’s Silver recipient was Fred Fleischner.

Fred Fleischner is the Senior Director of Marketing for United States Beef Corporation, Inc. dba Arby’s. Headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States Beef Corporation is the largest franchisee in the world of the Arby’s Restaurant Group.

Fleischner has marketing responsibilities for United States Beef retail, catering, and sales activities while strengthening the brand’s equity with persuasive communications to diverse demographic audiences.

During his career, Fleischner spent 15 years in various marketing management positions with Dollar Rent A Car and Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, including vice president, sales & marketing for Dollar Rent A Car, and vice president, advertising & corporate communications with Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group.

Prior to joining Dollar Rent A Car, Fleischner spent 20 years with Advertising Incorporated, at one time named one of the Southwest’s top ten advertising agencies. Joining the agency as a copywriter, Fleischner ultimately was promoted to president and chief operating officer, responsible for the marketing and advertising for many of Oklahoma’s major advertisers, including Safeway/ Homeland, Bank of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Natural Gas, Sonic Drive-Ins, Kens & Mazzio’s Pizza, and Thrifty Car Rental, among others.

In his community, he generously donates his time as Vice Chairman of Operation Aware, and also served on the executive committee of the Tulsa Convention & Visitors Bureau; the Economic Development Commission; the boards of the American Heart Association and the Tulsa Area United Way, serving as marketing chair for United Way in 2006 and 2007; and volunteered at Youth Services and the Indian Nations Council of the Boy Scouts of America. But the role he looks forward to the most is playing that of Santa Claus for Family & Children’s Services, which he has done since 2007.

Another prestigious award for the evening is the Award. The Award was established in 1996 to recognize companies or organizations that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the advancement of advertising and the American Advertising Federation – Tulsa Chapter. The nominees are required to excel in three different categories: advertising, service to the Ad Club, and service to area nonprofit organizations, schools, churches or city/state agencies. This year’s recipient was The Ad Program at The University of Tulsa, founded by Teresa Valero and Bill Hinkle.

This year, 29 s were awarded. The winners were:
