Tulsa Ballet II to Perform Solo Show Sept. 6 and 8

Tulsa Ballet II will perform “On Your Radar”, a mixed repertory program, September 6 and 8, 2013. The performance includes Ma Cong’s “Match Point”, Aurora’s Wedding Suite from “The Sleeping Beauty”, and the world-premiere piece “Vivir al Dia”, created especially for the ensemble by up-and-coming New York choreographer, Natrea Blake. Performances will take place at the Tulsa Ballet Studio K theater. A milestone in the group’s development, Artistic Director Marcello Angelini proudly kicks off the 2013-2014 season with “On Your Radar” in celebration of this brand new offering from Tulsa Ballet and first solo billing from the professional training ensemble.
Tulsa Ballet II () began formally in 2005, in an effort by Tulsa Ballet to expand its Center for Dance Education training program by providing a bridge for ballet students aspiring to transition to professional dance careers. trainees receive a stipend and the opportunity to perform with Tulsa Ballet in addition to a full year of outreach performances at area schools, special appearances and advanced training. Trainees are selected through a rigorous nationwide search, with over 300 dancers vying for a spot.
Adding to its repertory of educational programs and touring performances, “On Your Radar” marks the first time a performance has been billed alongside the main company as part of the Tulsa Ballet season – an important step in its transition into a fully fledged performing arm of Tulsa Ballet.
“This was the ultimate goal for the ensemble as it began its existence, and we are thrilled to have finally met this milestone,” Artistic Director Marcello Angelini said.
Further marking this transition, Tulsa Ballet II also has for the first time its own artistic staff, in the newly created position of Artistic Manager, a job being filled by former Tulsa Ballet principal dancer Alfonso Martin.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this group of young dancers grow. ‘On Your Radar’ will give the dancers a peek into what it’s like to work toward a full performance as a professional dancer, and more importantly, the high level of quality that Tulsa Ballet’s patrons have come to expect,” Martin said.
The 2013-2014 ensemble consists of 13 dancers, coming out of the schools of American Ballet Theatre and San Francisco Ballet, The Harid Conservatory, Tulsa Ballet’s own Center for Dance Education, and other top programs.
“The audience of ‘On Your Radar’ will experience a world-class show performed by a roster of dancers from the best ballet schools in the United States,” Martin said. “These dancers each have unique personalities that shine through in such individual ways both on and off the stage.”
