Tulsa Children’s Museum Brings Southern Louisiana Soul to Tulsa Families March 26
The Tulsa Children’s Museum and Grammy award-winning artist Terrance Simien will bring the rich history and multi-layered sounds of Zydeco, the music of the French-speaking Creoles of southern Louisiana, to Tulsa families at interactive concerts at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
Leading his Zydeco Experience Band, Simien will take Tulsa families along for a multicultural musical tour with his blend of Zydeco, soul, reggae, funk and Afro-Caribbean sounds. Simien’s Zydeco music has become synonymous with the cultural identity of southern Louisiana, and the Zydeco genre is an important part of America’s musical history, influencing Jazz and Blues.
A Louisiana native, Simien has received international recognition for his Zydeco music and has performed in more than 40 countries, including Cuba and West Africa. Most recognizably, Simien’s voice and music were featured in Disney’s recent “The Princess and the Frog” movie, which was set in New Orleans.
“Terrance Simien’s concert draws on a unique blend of music that is as important to the cultural heritage of southern Louisiana as it is to America’s musical history,” said Tobey Ballenger, concert chair. “The museum is excited to introduce Tulsa families to this culturally diverse concert that will appeal to children and adults alike.”
