Tulsa Community Foundation Hurricane Harvey Fund Tops $800,000
In response to the unprecedented loss of life and property resulting from Hurricane Harvey, Tulsa Community Foundation has established a disaster relief fund to assist victims.
Early support from Tulsa has already resulted in nearly $800,000 in relief funds.
The fund will provide both mid- and long-term relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey by supporting charitable and non-profit organizations which provide programs and services to victims of Hurricane Harvey in the impacted areas. Tulsa Community Foundation will work closely with the Greater Houston Community Foundation in distributing grants. Immediate and short-term needs will not be funded, as those needs are being addressed by the State and Federal governments, as well as many capable service organizations such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.
“We recognize the great needs of these families in the face of their crippling losses, and we simply have to help,” says Phil Lakin, Jr., chief executive officer of Tulsa Community Foundation. “Our Tulsa community has countless ties to Houston through families and businesses. The shared oil and gas history of our cities forms a strong bond across state lines, inspiring us to work together – one neighbor to another.

Hurricane Harvey has caused wide-spread damage to property from flooding and tornadoes over coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana, including loss of life. Houston, Texas and surrounding areas have sustained significant damage and destruction to public and private property. Many municipalities and counties have been declared “natural disaster” areas by State and Federal governments.

The Tulsa Community Foundation also provides emergency, disaster and hardship funds for several companies operating in the Houston area. Currently 13 funds are active and accepting applications for assistance from employees impacted by Hurricane Harvey. These assistance programs are made possible by , Health Care Services Corporation (Blue Cross and Blue Shield), Bank of Oklahoma, Cox, Dean Foods, Devon Energy, Enovation Controls, Genisys Controls, QuikTrip, SemGroup, T. D. Williamson and Williams.
The foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit public charity organized in 1998 to receive, administer and distribute gifts from individuals and organizations for the benefit and improvement of Tulsa and eastern Oklahoma. It seeks to be recognized as a community-owned organization that initiates, teaches and encourages personal and corporate charitable giving today to ensure that the philanthropic needs of Oklahomans can be met for all generations.
