Tulsa Earns Narrow 74-71 Win Over Southern Miss


Hattiesburg, Miss. – Taleya Mayberry, Chanice Scott and Amanda Mason all netted double-digit points for Tulsa and led TU to 74-71 win over Southern Miss on Sunday evening at the Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in Conference , while the Golden Eagles fell to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Mayberry had a team-best 19 points, six steals and six assists in 36 minutes of play. Scott added 18 points, while Mason netted 13 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. The Golden Hurricane shot 43-percent from the field, 37-percent from behind the arc and 75-percent from the charity stripe.

Southern Miss edged TU 38-36 in rebounds, but the Golden Hurricane had a 14-9 advantage in steals and both teams had three blocks.

Two free throws by Scott and a three-point basket by Mayberry gave Tulsa a 5-0 lead to begin the first half, but countered with a 16-0 run. The Golden Eagles continued to inch ahead, earning a 16-point advantage (31-15) with just under seven minutes to play, but TU battled back and was down by five at the break (37-32).

TU came out and out-scored , 12-6, to take the lead 44-43 at the 16:11 mark. Both teams traded baskets and Tulsa took the lead for the remainder of the game with 11:42 remaining in the contest. The Golden Hurricane earned a game-best eight point lead at the 7:53 mark.

Southern Miss was led by four players in double-digits, including Tanesha Washington (18), Rachel Vigers (16), Geneshia Dunbar (12) and Brittany Johnson (10). Washington and Vigers both had eight rebounds in the contest, while Jamierra Faulkner recorded 11 assists and Niesha Pierce had three steals.
