TPS’ Farm-to-School Programs Impact Community

Based on community nominations, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) recently awarded Tulsa Public Schools a “One in a Melon” award for administering exemplary farm-to-school programs. Fifty top programs across the country were selected for the award.

Board Approves New Principals for Seven TPS Sites

In June, the Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education approved principal recommendations for seven school sites: Thoreau Demonstration Academy, Skelly Elementary, Central Junior High and High School, Clinton Middle School, Eugene Field Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Edison Preparatory School, and Marshall Elementary. The new administrators begin their positions on July 1.

Teacher of the Year Creates Opportunities

“I knew that I wanted to be in a school where I could help provide new opportunities for kids,” Robert Kaiser says regarding the future he imagined for himself in education.

Dr. Simon and Rita Levit Honored

In May, as part of the Levit Prize for Excellence in Arts Education at Tulsa Public Schools, new inductees into the TPS Fine Arts Hall of Fame were recognized.

STEM FUTURE:

On May 17, Webster High School graduates, from left, Martin Salazar, Malay Tiana Jackson, Jaymie Burleson, James Boone and Kory Whited (not pictured) received $2,500 HollyFrontier STEM Awards. A selection committee comprised of Webster science, technology, engineering and math teachers, alongside school counselors determined the recipients. These graduates will be attending college in pursuit of a STEM-related degree.

TPS Announces Teachers of the Year

On Jan. 15, Tulsa Public Schools’ site Teacher of the Year winners met with previous Teacher of the Year recipients at East Central High School, 12150 E. 11th St. Past honorees worked with their 2016 counterparts to help them develop their portfolios that will later be used to determine the winner of the Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year.

Addressing Hunger

FEEDING THE FUTURE: Aubrey Beckley, Nathan Hale High School student, and Nathan Hale High School Principal Caleb Starr pose during Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa’s recent launch of its Feed Our Future High School Adoption Program, which addresses chronic food insecurity and hunger among Tulsa high school students. The program will lend supplemental nutritional support to students in select Tulsa Public Schools high schools, beginning with students at Nathan Hale High School. When fully implemented, the program will provide two weekend meals to Nathan Hale students per week and one mid-week meal per week.

Will Rogers College High Holds Open House

Teachers Receive Grants From Community

Teachers at Tulsa Public Schools’ Mark Twain Elementary are experiencing firsthand the generosity of the local community.
